most of Romes power was because of it's army. This is because they had taken over all of the states around the mediterranean, the soldiers at the start had to provide their own basic training and equipment but this proved to be not as affective in battle so they tried a new approach and by second century BC the Romans had made a new fighting unit (Maniple) each were made up of 60 men in each this allowed the different maniples to be big enough to go to battle but still sneak around the bush, A legion of 3600 infantry 900 cavalry had 30 maniples
